Chester Zoo python cured of cancer using electrochemotherapy

A 4.5-meter reticulated python named Jodie Foster at the Chester Zoo in England has become the first known member of its species to be cured of cancer using electrochemotherapy. The University of Liverpool released details of the procedure, which took place in October 2025.

The snake began showing reduced mobility and appetite approximately two years ago, leading to a diagnosis of a malignant tumor in the jaw. While an initial surgery successfully removed the nodule, the disease recurred in the same location a year later, making feeding difficult.

To treat the recurrence, veterinarians performed a combined surgery and electrochemotherapy. This involved removing part of the jaw and applying a chemotherapeutic agent, followed by the use of thin metal electrodes to deliver electrical pulses. This technique breaks down cancer cells and increases the absorption of the medication. Following the procedure, the python regained its weight and ability to eat, with recent exams showing no remaining traces of the disease.
