Chester Zoo records first wasp spider sighting in Cheshire

Conservationists at Chester Zoo have recorded the first sighting of a wasp spider in Cheshire, England. The yellow-and-black spider, nicknamed ‘Wendy’, was discovered by estate biodiversity assistant Rosie Cooper during a routine biodiversity survey of the zoo’s grounds.

Experts from the British Arachnological Society confirmed the species' presence in the region. Officials at the zoo noted that the arrival of the wasp spider is indicative of a broader trend where species are migrating northward as southern European habitats warm due to climate change. Some conservation groups refer to such migrating wildlife as ‘climate refugees’ because their movement is driven by human-induced environmental shifts.
