Chestnut trees in Hungary show signs of distress through autumn flowering

The phenomenon of chestnut trees flowering in autumn, observed in locations such as Békéscsaba, is a sign of ecological distress rather than a natural beauty. This secondary flowering indicates a disruption in the tree's natural rhythm and a loss of biological balance.

Experts suggest the cause is often the horse chestnut leaf miner. This insect lays eggs on the leaves, and the resulting larvae feed internally, causing the foliage to fall prematurely in mid-summer. This early leaf loss confuses the tree's seasonal perception, leading it to attempt flowering again before winter. This process drains significant energy from an already weakened tree and may contribute to its long-term decline.
