Chet Faliszek argues massive teams hinder game development

Chet Faliszek, a veteran writer and former Valve developer known for 'Left 4 Dead', argues that massive development teams are often inefficient in the video game industry. In a recent video, Faliszek addressed why Valve does not engage in large-scale hiring, stating that games are not designed to be produced by teams of 10,000 people.

Faliszek noted that while multi-billion dollar projects like Rockstar Games' 'GTA 6' may require enormous staff, such projects are exceptions to the rule. He cited Ubisoft as an example of a company that employs thousands of top-tier artists, suggesting that while high graphical fidelity is a goal, the resulting team bloat often fails to provide a high return on investment.

Furthermore, Faliszek identified indecision and constant backtracking as the primary causes of lengthy development cycles, rather than the actual production process itself. He suggested that overly large teams can lead to wasted time and diminished productivity due to these organizational hurdles.
