Chetumal emerges as top destination for young travelers in Mexico
Chetumal is emerging as a key destination for Millennial and Gen Z travelers in Mexico. According to an Airbnb analysis of emerging destinations in Latin America, Chetumal is among eight Mexican cities that saw an increase in interest of over 80 percent from these younger demographics.
Unlike traditional beach-focused tourism, the appeal of Chetumal lies in its jungle landscapes, local culture, and archaeological heritage. A primary draw is Ichkabal, an ancient Mayan city located in southern Quintana Roo. The site features monumental structures exceeding 40 meters in height, some dating back over 1,500 years, including architectural complexes used as solar observatories.
This shift aligns with global trends noted in the OECD Tourism Trends and Policies 2026 report, which projects that by 2030, Millennials and Gen Z will represent more than half of all global travelers. These groups increasingly prioritize cultural experiences and human interaction over traditional consumption.
