Chetumal launches first electric bus route via MOBI system

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has launched the Sian Ka’an–Las Américas route in Chetumal, marking the start of the Quintana Roo Wellbeing Mobility System (MOBI). This inaugural route utilizes five Mexican-made TARUK electric buses, which feature air conditioning, Wi-Fi, USB ports, and real-time video surveillance.

The 21-kilometer route is designed to serve approximately 45,752 residents across 47 neighborhoods, connecting 17,351 homes, 47 schools, and over 2,000 economic units. The service operates daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and includes universal accessibility features such as low floors, wheelchair spaces, and Braille signage.

A social fare system has been implemented using color-coded electronic cards. People with disabilities will travel for free, while students and senior citizens will receive subsidized rates. The MOBI system infrastructure is prepared to eventually support up to 66 electric buses, with an initial plan for 10 routes in the capital city.
