Fans expressed outrage, accusing the artist of 'defiling' or 'disfiguring' the late icon's image. In response to the intense criticism, Cheung Yu-chen issued a formal apology on Instagram, stating that his intention was never to disrespect the singer. He explained that the fly character was meant to represent 'ordinary, small people' who cannot choose their origins, while a butterfly in the artwork was intended to symbolize Cheung's enduring warmth and light.

Despite the explanation, many fans remain skeptical, arguing that the visual execution resembles a parody rather than a tribute and questioning the symbolism used in the design.
