Chevron and Eni expand oil operations in Venezuela

Major international oil companies are expanding operations in Venezuela through new agreements. Chevron has announced plans to invest over $7 billion over the next five years, aiming to double its production to approximately 600,000 barrels per day. This expansion focuses on the Orinoco Belt, specifically the Carabobo areas.

Italian firm Eni has secured a 25-year contract to operate the Junín 5 field, which contains an estimated 35 billion barrels of certified oil. Additionally, the Colombian company GeoPark has signed a 25-year productive participation contract with PDVSA to exploit the Baré Block, which holds over 15.7 billion barrels of oil in place. GeoPark intends to increase production to a peak of between 85,000 and 95,000 barrels per day.

These developments follow a broader shift in Venezuela's energy policy, allowing private companies greater operational control compared to previous joint-venture models. While officials state these commercial agreements do not compromise national sovereignty, some economists have raised concerns regarding the economic terms and the potential for subsidies to the United States.
