Chevron files US lawsuit to collect $224 million from Ecuador

Chevron Corp. and its subsidiary TexPet lodged a petition with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking enforcement of a Hague arbitration award that obliges Ecuador to pay roughly $224 million. The claim, filed on 17 July 2026, covers $175.7 million in damages, $40.4 million in pre‑award interest and an additional $8.1 million in accrued charges.

The dispute stems from a two‑decade‑long legal battle over Chevron’s former Texaco operations in Ecuador’s Amazon region. After communities sued over environmental damage in Lago Agrio, an international arbitration in The Hague issued a 2025 award, later corrected in February 2026. Ecuador has not complied with the ruling, prompting the companies to invoke New York Convention provisions and U.S.‑Ecuador investment treaty mechanisms to obtain payment through U.S. courts.
