Chevron to begin seismic surveys in Greece by 2026

Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou has confirmed that Chevron is scheduled to begin seismic surveys in the Ionian Sea, as well as south of the Peloponnese and Crete, by the end of 2026. This announcement followed discussions between the Minister and Beatrice Bienvenu, Chevron’s head for Greece, in the United States.

Speaking at an Atlantic Council high-level dialogue in New York, Papastavrou emphasized Greece’s central role in shaping the new European energy architecture. He highlighted the importance of energy interconnectors, such as the Greece–Cyprus–Israel link and the GREGY project connecting Egypt to the European market, as essential tools for security and resilience.

The Minister stressed that energy should not be used as a tool for geopolitical blackmail by nations such as Russia or Iran. He also noted the involvement of other major international energy groups, including ExxonMobil, in developing Greece’s hydrocarbon market while adhering to strict environmental and safety standards.
