Chew Jetty fire destroys businesses in George Town

A major fire broke out at Chew Jetty in George Town early Saturday morning, destroying five business premises. The blaze, which reportedly began after 1:00 AM, spread rapidly through the area.

Hong Jing Lian, a car paint shop owner who has operated at the location since 1997, estimated his losses at approximately RM1 million. The fire destroyed his entire inventory, including paint and thinner, as well as three customer vehicles: a Suzuki Swift, a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and a BMW. CCTV footage from his shop showed no fire within his premises at 12:59 AM, suggesting the flames originated from another unit.

Toh Aik Aun, a T-shirt printing entrepreneur with nearly 30 years of business at the jetty, also reported significant losses, including hundreds of undelivered shirts. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby petrol station and residential areas. The cause of the fire and the total financial impact are currently under investigation.
