Chewing sugary gum after nitrate‑rich vegetables lowers blood pressure

A study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that chewing sugary gum after consuming nitrate‑rich vegetables such as spinach, beetroot and kale can enhance the conversion of dietary nitrates to nitric oxide. Participants who chewed sugar‑containing Hubba Bubba gum for three to six hours after drinking beet juice showed a 45% increase in oral nitrite and a 25% rise in systemic nitrite levels compared with those who chewed sugar‑free Wrigley’s Extra. The higher saliva acidity facilitated the bacterial conversion process, resulting in a short‑term reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers caution that sugary gum should not replace established blood‑pressure treatments and note the temporary nature of the effect and potential dental health risks. The findings may interest athletes who use beetroot supplements for performance, and the authors suggest developing tooth‑friendly alternatives for longer‑term use.
