Cheyenne Police warn of FedEx impersonation phone scam

The Cheyenne Police Department has issued a warning to residents following a high-pressure phone scam targeting a local business. In the incident, a scammer impersonating FedEx claimed there was a package payment issue that required immediate resolution to avoid a $20,000 fine.

The perpetrator used multiple tactics to confuse the victim, including sending text messages that impersonated the business owner. The caller instructed an employee to leave their workplace, withdraw cash, and wire the funds to a town in Mexico, falsely promising the money would be refunded by the end of the business day. The scammer reportedly insisted on staying on the line to prevent the employee from verifying the information.

Police advise the public to look for signs of fraud such as false urgency, continuous phone contact intended to prevent outside consultation, and impersonation of official agencies. Residents are encouraged to slow down, verify legitimacy through known contact numbers, and report suspicious activity to local dispatch.
