Chia seeds provide high nutritional value and health benefits
Chia seeds are nutrient-dense superfoods containing soluble fiber, plant-based omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid), protein, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
The high fiber content supports digestive health and can promote satiety by forming a gel when mixed with liquids. However, experts warn against consuming raw, dry chia seeds, as they can absorb significant amounts of liquid in the digestive tract, potentially creating a choking or blockage hazard. It is recommended to soak them in liquids, such as milk or water, to create puddings or incorporate them into yogurt and smoothies.
While chia seeds are a valuable source of ALA, the conversion of this plant-based omega-3 into EPA and DHA is inefficient in humans, meaning they should complement rather than replace seafood-derived omega-3 supplements. For optimal health, they should be consumed as part of a balanced diet and accompanied by sufficient hydration.
