Chiang Mai police arrest driver after nursing assistant killed in gang clash
A 20-year-old Myanmar national has been arrested following a fatal collision on the Chiang Mai Super Highway that killed Kanokrat Yottiwong, a certified nurse assistant. The incident occurred near the Don Chan intersection around midnight on November 1, during a violent confrontation between rival teenage gangs.
Reports indicate the clash began after a dispute on social media, leading to groups exchanging gunfire and projectiles. Ms. Yottiwong, who worked at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, reportedly stopped her vehicle to provide medical assistance to teenagers injured during the altercation. While she was attempting to help, a pickup truck involved in a high-speed pursuit struck her, causing fatal injuries at the scene.
The driver claimed he struck the victim because he was ducking to avoid gunfire from a rival group, but police are questioning this account and suspect high-speed driving. Authorities have identified approximately 40 youths involved in the clashes and intend to press formal charges. Mae Ping Police have stated they will oppose bail for the primary suspects due to public safety concerns and weapons charges.
