Chiang Mai street sweeper killed by drunk driver
A 67-year-old municipal street sweeper was killed in a fatal accident early Monday morning in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The victim, an employee of the Chiang Mai Municipality, was working on Bunrueang Rit Road in the Si Phum subdistrict when she was struck by a speeding grey Toyota Yaris.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was weaving erratically before striking the woman and dragging her for more than 100 metres. A bystander attempted to stop the vehicle by honking and eventually flagged down a motorcyclist to block the car's path. Rescue workers from the Phetkasem Chiang Mai Foundation used lifting gear to free the victim from underneath the car, but she had already passed away at the scene.
Police arrested the 48-year-old driver, identified as Chumnat, who recorded a blood alcohol level of 172 mg%. The driver reportedly remained at the scene and expressed remorse to investigators. He has been charged with drink-driving causing death and was released on bail pending court prosecution.
