Chiang Wan-an defends calls for accountability amid toxic oil scandal

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Shen Po-yang are engaged in a political dispute regarding the recent toxic oil scandal and calls for government accountability.

During a political rally in Hualien, Chiang addressed criticisms regarding his calls for a cabinet dissolution. He clarified that his stance is a response to the toxic oil incident, asserting that President Lai Ching-te should apologize and the Premier should take political responsibility for the matter.

In response, Shen Po-yang accused Chiang of targeting Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Fu Kun-chi and suggested Chiang’s calls for dissolution imply dissatisfaction with the legislature's performance. Additionally, Yin Wei, Chairperson of the Taipei City Government Research and Development Commission, criticized the administration's handling of food safety, questioning why certain toxic oil products were not removed from shelves and why the government has not provided clear explanations for the contamination.
