Chianti Classico Prices Fall 30% as Italian Winemakers Cut Yields

A hectoliter of Chianti Classico is now about 30% cheaper than before the Covid pandemic, with standard Chianti down roughly 35%. Producers asked for a roughly 20% cut in vineyard yields, and regional assessor Leonardo Marras approved the reduction for the Brunello, Chianti Classico, Chianti and Toscana IGT consortia. The aim is to curb oversupply and restore a balance between production and demand.

Winemakers face tight finances; some may skip the harvest or sell grapes as barrel wine to avoid unsold stock that now represents more than one and a half vintages in cellar inventories. Market prices are trading well below official estimates, with industry insider Piergiorgio Castellani noting that real prices are 10‑15% under the average forecasts. The price slump threatens profitability for many small and medium‑sized producers who invested heavily in recent years.
