Chiapas annexation to Mexico marks 202 years

The 202nd anniversary of the annexation of Chiapas to Mexico was commemorated, marking the historical moment when the territory decided to join the Mexican federation through a popular plebiscite.

In 1824, following the fall of the first Mexican empire, the inhabitants of Chiapas—which previously belonged to the Captaincy General of Guatemala—voted to incorporate into the Mexican Republic. This decision was driven by local councils in areas such as Comitán, Tuxtla, and Ciudad Real due to fiscal burdens and lack of attention from Central American authorities. The process concluded with the vote count on September 12, 1824, and the formal incorporation on September 14.

Commemorative events included academic lectures at the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Chiapas and a civic ceremony in Chetumal, Quintana Roo. The ceremony in Quintana Roo, led by state officials, honored the voluntary nature of the integration that strengthened the nation's territorial unity.
