Chiapas reports lowest gender pay gap in Mexico due to low wages

In Chiapas, Mexico, the gender pay gap is the lowest in the country, with men earning an average of 5,000 pesos per month compared to 4,500 pesos for women. However, analysis by BBVA Research based on INEGI data suggests this narrow 500-peso difference does not indicate improved female remuneration, but rather reflects the low overall income levels for both genders in the region.

While the gap is small, Chiapas continues to face significant economic challenges. The state maintains one of the highest rates of labor poverty in the nation, despite a slight reduction from 60.8 percent to 59.8 percent in the second quarter of 2026.
