Chiapas social initiatives focus on literacy and indigenous rights

In Chiapas, Mexico, recent social and educational activities have highlighted the region's ongoing struggles and community efforts. At Casa Chiapas, a testimonial photographic exhibition was inaugurated to showcase the impact of the “Chiapas Puede” and “Con la UNACH puede más” programs. These initiatives, led by the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH), focus on literacy efforts for individuals unable to read or write. UNACH Rector Oswaldo Chacón Rojas emphasized that literacy is a social mission and a matter of human rights, noting that strengthening basic education is essential to meeting national higher education goals.

Separately, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, more than 200 students from the Jacinto Canek Intercultural Bilingual Normal School marched to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Traveling from Zinacantán, the students stated the march was not a celebration but a demand for the recognition and protection of indigenous rights. The demonstration aimed to raise awareness regarding systemic violence and the lack of recognition faced by indigenous communities.
