Gender medicine and healthcare access highlighted in Italy
Various initiatives and studies in Italy are highlighting the importance of gender medicine and addressing disparities in healthcare access. An analysis by IQVIA, presented during an event supervised by UN Women and hosted by Lilly, reveals that gender differences significantly impact how health is perceived and accessed. While 84% of women prioritize health, only 39% feel capable of actively managing their daily healthcare due to economic barriers, family responsibilities, and work instability.
Community discussions are also taking place to promote gender medicine, an interdisciplinary field focused on how sex influences human physiology and pathology. This includes recognizing different symptoms in conditions like myocardial infarction and adjusting drug testing to account for hormonal differences. Local events in Chiavari and Russi aim to deepen public understanding of how gender-specific diagnostic paths and prevention strategies can improve medical outcomes.
Additionally, breast cancer prevention remains a focus through campaigns like LILT’s ‘Pink Ribbon’ in Trento and the ‘Una vita in rosa’ association in Lissone, which provides free screenings to encourage early diagnosis.
