Chiayi City Central Fountain Roundabout reopens after renovation

The Chiayi City Central Fountain Roundabout has officially reopened following a comprehensive 36-million-TWD renovation project. The landmark, which has served the city since the fountain was first installed in 1914, underwent repairs to address structural aging and safety concerns.

The renovation included updating the fountain equipment, improving the pool structure and waterproofing systems, and introducing energy-saving LED lighting to restore the iconic seven-color light displays. A key feature of the project was the restoration of the 'KANO 1931' eagle statue, which depicts pitcher Wu Ming-chieh. Sculptor Pu Hao-ming was commissioned to recast the statue in bronze to preserve its original proportions and detail.

Chiayi Mayor Huang Min-hui presided over the reopening ceremony, noting the roundabout's historical significance as both a city landmark and a symbolic site for democratic expression. The project was completed in September after a 180-day construction period.
