Chiayi leaders clash over delayed HSR feeder rail project

During a Democratic Progressive Party policy briefing in Chiayi, local leaders and central government officials clashed over the long-delayed construction of a rail link for the Chiayi High Speed Rail station.

Chiayi Mayor Huang Min-hui criticized the central government for failing to deliver on promises, stating that the city has waited over 21 years for the project. She argued that the lack of progress regarding the light rail or HSR feeder tracks denies citizens basic transportation justice. Huang noted that the proposal has 100% support from local city councilors and village chiefs.

In response, Minister of Transportation Chen Shih-kai disputed claims of a 20-year delay, asserting that the Chiayi City Government only formally submitted the application in September 2022. He stated that while the Ministry of Transportation approved feasibility study funding within three months, the city has failed to complete cross-county coordination or resubmit revised plans for 20 months.

Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Wang Mei-hui highlighted her efforts to secure central resources for Chiayi, including funding for libraries, medical buildings, and flood control, emphasizing her commitment to local development.
