Chiayi regions launch free school lunch programs for students
Chiayi County and Chiayi City have launched comprehensive free school lunch programs for the new academic year.
In Chiayi County, the government is providing free nutritious lunches to approximately 27,600 students across public high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools. The county has increased the subsidy to 62 TWD per meal, representing an annual investment of 342.24 million TWD. County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang visited Xianghe Elementary School to inspect food quality and kitchen operations, noting that the program aims to reduce the financial burden on parents while ensuring balanced nutrition using local ingredients.
Simultaneously, Chiayi City is implementing a free lunch policy for approximately 22,000 students in public elementary and junior high schools, as well as private junior high schools. The city provides subsidies of 45 TWD for junior high and 40 TWD for elementary school food costs per meal, bringing the total investment per meal to 75 TWD and 70 TWD, respectively.
In addition to nutrition, Chiayi County is continuing its efforts to improve school infrastructure. The county has invested over 350 million TWD in renovating old school toilets over the last decade and has planned an additional 283.96 million TWD for further improvements across 97 schools between 2025 and 2027.
