Chiba authorities release details of abandoned vehicles after heavy rain

Following record-breaking heavy rainfall in Chiba Prefecture, authorities are managing the aftermath of widespread road flooding that left thousands of vehicles stranded. In Chiba City alone, approximately 2,500 vehicles were temporarily immobilized by rising waters.

To facilitate the recovery of abandoned vehicles, Chiba Prefecture and Chiba City have begun publishing details of 50 vehicles with unknown owners on their official websites. The information includes partial license plate numbers, vehicle models, and colors to help owners identify their property. Officials urge owners to contact the civil engineering office governing the area where their vehicle became stuck.

Regarding financial implications, experts note that compulsory automobile insurance does not cover flood damage. Coverage for repairs or replacement depends on whether the owner has voluntary vehicle insurance. Additionally, individuals with outstanding vehicle loans remain obligated to complete their payments even if the vehicle is rendered unserviceable by the flood.
