Chiba Prefecture flooding kills at least 10 people in Japan
Torrential rains and severe flooding in Japan's Chiba Prefecture have resulted in at least 10 deaths and left one person missing. The extreme weather, which struck between Thursday and Friday, saw record-breaking rainfall of 348 liters per square meter in a 12-hour period.
In addition to the fatalities, approximately 30 people were injured, with two reported in serious condition. The flooding has caused significant property damage, with roughly 1,300 homes inundated and over 1,200 vehicles abandoned in the streets. Utility disruptions were widespread, cutting power to approximately 26,000 households and gas to 13,000 customers.
Transportation infrastructure has been heavily impacted. The East Japan Railway Company suspended services on several lines, including the JR Kyo and Korori lines. At Narita Airport, approximately 6,000 passengers were stranded due to transport disruptions. Authorities have issued evacuation orders in several municipalities, including Yotsukaido, due to the heightened risk of landslides caused by unstable terrain.
