Chiba heavy rain damage: flooding and landslides impact region
Heavy rainfall in August and September caused significant flooding and landslides across Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The extreme weather, including record-breaking precipitation and Typhoon 25, led to inundated homes, collapsed river embankments due to seepage, and damaged infrastructure.
In Sodegaura, Tokyo German Village suffered seven landslides and severe path erosion, with some walkways being gouged up to 50cm deep. Despite repeated damage to restoration efforts, the facility has seen a recovery in visitor numbers as marigold displays return. Local staff have noted the resilience of cosmos flowers that sprouted despite the soil being washed away.
Professor Hiroshi Goto of the Faculty of Science and Engineering explains that Chiba's coastal reclaimed land and local depressions contributed to the flooding. He suggests that urban planning should incorporate water retention systems, such as rain gardens or multi-purpose spaces like Nissan Stadium, to manage excess runoff. For personal safety, he advises monitoring water depth and flow velocity, noting that even 20cm of water can be dangerous if the current is strong.
