Chiba man arrested for attempted murder of neighbor with survival knife

Mikio Shinohara, a 49-year-old unemployed man, has been arrested for the attempted murder of his neighbor in Chiba City. The incident occurred around 4:20 PM on October 1, 2026, in a residential area of Wakaba Ward.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, was reportedly attacked while washing his car in a driveway. He sustained multiple wounds to the back of his head and neck from a survival knife approximately 20 cm in length. The victim was transported to a hospital in a semi-conscious state due to heavy blood loss.

Shinohara fled the scene but was arrested near his home later that evening. During police questioning, he admitted to the attack, stating, “I didn't care if he died, and I intended to kill him, so I slashed the victim near his neck.” Police are investigating the motive, noting the targeted nature of the wounds suggests strong intent to kill.
