Chiba Prefecture celebrates traditional Tori-no-Ichi festivals
Traditional Tori-no-Ichi festivals, held on the days of the Rooster in the lunar calendar to pray for good fortune and business prosperity, are approaching in Chiba Prefecture.
Chiba Jinja in Chiba City will hold its event in November, with the shrine directly bestowing luck-bringing kumade (rakes) rather than using street vendors. These rakes range from small household versions to large models for businesses.
In Funabashi, Funabashi Daijingu (Ohibi Shrine) hosts a unique Tori-no-Ichi in December, a rarity compared to the typical November schedule. The festival features various kumade stalls and traditional performances, including Kagura and Gagaku music.
Historically, the kumade originated from agricultural tools and evolved into charms used to “rake in” good luck. Traditions suggest that upgrading to a larger rake each year brings more fortune, and they are typically displayed in high places near entrances to draw luck into the home.
