Record-breaking rainfall has struck Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, resulting in at least nine deaths and leaving one person missing. The intense downpour, described by Governor Toshihito Kumagai as an “extremely unusual situation,” triggered the highest level of heavy rainfall alert for the first time in the region.

The flooding has caused widespread disruption, including power outages affecting approximately 20,000 homes and significant transport chaos. At Narita International Airport, roughly 7,000 passengers were stranded due to disrupted rail and road services, prompting airport staff to distribute food and sleeping bags.

Damage to property is extensive, with reports indicating that over 1,000 homes have been flooded and dozens of houses partially or fully destroyed. Additionally, approximately 1,200 vehicles were left abandoned on roads due to the rising waters. This period has become the wettest August in Chiba in sixty years, with some areas recording rainfall levels triple the monthly average.
