Archdiocese of Chicago establishes first U.S. suicide memorial

The Archdiocese of Chicago has dedicated the ‘At Peace’ memorial at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, marking the first suicide memorial established by a U.S. archdiocese. The initiative signals a shift in the Catholic Church toward a more compassionate approach to families grieving those who died by suicide.

The memorial honors the work of the Rev. Charles Rubey, who founded the ‘Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide’ (LOSS) program in 1979 through Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Rubey’s ministry was born from a desire to provide support and reassurance to families who previously faced judgment or exclusion from funeral rites and consecrated burial grounds.

While Catholic teaching continues to view suicide as a grave sin, the Church now acknowledges that mental health struggles can influence such actions and maintains that salvation remains possible for those who take their own lives.
