Chicago area power outages and gas shortages follow severe storms

Severe storms, including tornadoes and intense electrical activity, have caused widespread power outages and gas shortages across the Chicago metropolitan area, affecting parts of Illinois and Indiana.

ComEd has deployed over 4,000 workers and contractors to repair damaged infrastructure. The utility company projects that 80% of affected customers will have power restored by midday Thursday, August 13, with approximately 99% of service expected to be recovered by Saturday, August 15.

The outages have led to significant fuel shortages, with residents reporting long lines and empty tanks at gas stations. Many individuals have traveled across state lines to find available gasoline for vehicles and home generators.

In response to the prolonged outages, the FDA has issued safety guidelines regarding food preservation, advising residents to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to prevent spoilage. Local authorities also warn the public to stay away from downed power lines, which should be treated as energized and dangerous.
