Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson recognized as top NFL play caller

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has been recognized by NFL executives and scouts for his offensive play-calling expertise. In a poll of 20 league officials, Johnson was named the top play caller in the NFL, excluding Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. He also received significant votes for being the best fourth-quarter coach.

Following Johnson's arrival, the Bears' offense saw a dramatic improvement. After ranking last in total offense in the previous season with 284.6 yards per game, the team climbed to sixth in the league in 2025, averaging 369.2 yards per game. This resurgence was supported by quarterback Caleb Williams, who set a franchise record with 3,942 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, and a rushing attack that ranked third in the league.

As the team prepares for the 2026 season, challenges remain regarding roster depth. While the offense remains a strength, the defense faces hurdles following the loss of safety Coby Bryant and Kyler Gordon. Additionally, the team continues to seek stability at key positions such as left tackle and center.
