Chicago Bears sign veteran Marcus Davenport to bolster defense

The Chicago Bears have signed veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport to bolster their defensive line and pass rush. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who previously worked with Davenport in New Orleans, described him as a “disruptive force” but noted that his primary challenge has been maintaining health throughout his career.

Head coach Ben Johnson indicated that Davenport is expected to provide depth and competition to the edge rusher position rather than serving as a primary starter. Johnson noted that the team has a specific plan in place to ramp up Davenport's involvement, as he is not yet ready to begin practice.

Davenport’s recent seasons have been hampered by injuries, including missing 37 games over the last three years. While his sack production has declined since his 2021 season, his familiarity with Allen’s defensive scheme is seen as a potential advantage for the Bears' defense.
