Chicago Bears face mounting secondary injuries during training camp

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson said the offense struggled in early camp practice and praised a later improvement, but the team’s secondary is dealing with a spate of injuries. Starting nickel back Kyler Gordon remains on the physically unable to perform list while rehabbing a lingering injury, and cornerback Terell Smith was sidelined after a practice incident on August 3.

Additional setbacks include serious leg injuries to cornerback Dallis Flowers, who was helped off the field on August 6, and safety Gervarrius Owens, who required a cart after a left‑leg issue during a punt drill. The Bears now rely on projected starters Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson and Josh Blackwell to fill the depleted secondary.

The injury toll raises concerns for Chicago’s defensive outlook as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
