Chicago City Council approves parking meter sale and development funding
The Chicago City Council has approved a $2.53 billion deal for New York investment firm Stonepeak Partners to acquire the city’s on-street parking meters. The approved agreement includes a $75 million transfer fee, 5% of future net income, and a 2% share of the sale price if the meters are resold before 2084. The deal also reduces certain compensation requirements for the city regarding meter service interruptions.
Separately, the City Council is navigating significant fiscal challenges as it prepares for the 2027 budget. A majority of the Council has signaled it will work with Mayor Brandon Johnson to address a nearly $900 million deficit, provided he avoids proposing a corporate head tax or property tax increases.
In infrastructure development, the Council also approved $201.6 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for the Foundry Park mixed-use project. This $3 billion development is expected to include thousands of residences, office space, and hotel facilities. Meanwhile, arts advocacy groups are lobbying the Mayor to increase cultural grants by $15 million in the upcoming budget to reverse recent funding cuts.
