Chicago Cubs defeat Cincinnati Reds in series finale
The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 in the rubber game of their three‑game series, clinching the series win before the All‑Star break. Alex Bregman delivered a three‑run homer in the seventh inning, while Michael Busch added two hits, an RBI and a run, and Kevin Alcantara drove in two runs. Cubs left‑hander Matthew Boyd (5‑1) earned the win, allowing four hits and six runs over 6 1/3 innings.
The Reds’ starting pitcher Nick Lodolo was placed on the 15‑day injured list after developing a blister on his left index finger during the loss. The club recalled right‑hander Chase Petty from Triple‑A Louisville. Lodolo, 28, had been 3‑2 with a 4.60 ERA this season before the injury.
Both teams entered the game with mixed recent form: the Cubs were 53‑42 overall and second in the NL Central, while the Reds were 43‑51 and fifth in the division.
