Chicago Cubs confront severe pitching crisis as several arms land on injured list

The Chicago Cubs are dealing with a mounting shortage of healthy pitchers. Reliever Hoby Milner underwent an emergency appendectomy, ruling him out for four to six weeks, while right‑hander Ethan Roberts was placed on the injured list with forearm inflammation after a series of ineffective outings. The team has also been without closer Daniel Palencia since mid‑June, and other bullpen members such as Phil Maton and starter Ben Brown have previously missed time. The injuries have left only a handful of bullpen arms from the Opening Day roster, forcing the Cubs to rely on recent acquisitions like Bryse Wilson and a trade for veteran starter David Peterson, who debuted with a 5.2‑inning effort in an 8‑2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

With roughly nine of the projected thirteen pitchers on the 26‑man roster already unavailable, manager Craig Counsell warned that the quality of available arms is declining and the club will need to continue scouting the waiver wire and trade market as the August 3 deadline approaches.
