Chicago Fire advance to Leagues Cup quarterfinals after defeating Cruz Azul

The Chicago Fire have advanced to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals following a 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul. Puso Dithejane secured the win with two goals, scoring in the 67th minute and again during stoppage time. Despite a goal by Nicolas Ibañez for Cruz Azul in the 81st minute, the Mexican side was eliminated from the tournament.

Robert Lewandowski, who started for Chicago, saw a goal disallowed by referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere for a perceived foul on Jeremy Marquez, a decision contested by both the player and coach Gregg Berhalter. Chicago Fire finishes the group stage with a perfect record of three wins.

The Leagues Cup quarterfinals are set with four teams from MLS and four from Liga MX. The matchups will be:

All quarterfinal matches will be played as single-elimination games in the United States between August 25 and 27. In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, the matches will proceed directly to a penalty shootout without extra time.
