Chicago funeral home investigation finds over 50 bodies

Authorities have launched an investigation following the discovery of more than 50 bodies being kept in improper conditions at the South Chicago Chapel in southeast Chicago. The remains were found in various stages of decomposition.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that 11 individuals have been identified so far. Ten families have been notified, and the remains of two individuals have been transferred to other funeral homes. Investigators are currently reviewing documentation to identify the remaining deceased and verify death certificates.

Local residents reported noticing an intense, unpleasant odor emanating from the building, which some compared to sewage, prior to the discovery. The funeral home has operated at the 2939 E. 95th St. location for at least 86 years. It is currently unclear how long the bodies were stored improperly or the reasons behind the mismanagement.
