Chicago Haitian community faces TPS uncertainty as immigration enforcement intensifies

Advocacy groups in Chicago held a press conference calling for protests after a Supreme Court decision allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants. Work permits for Haitians were temporarily extended to July 24, but uncertainty remains for an estimated 40,000 Haitian residents in the Chicagoland area. Haitian leaders expressed fear and confusion, with Aline Lauture noting, “People are unsettled,” and Lynn Toussaint warning that the loss of TPS could leave families homeless.

At the same time, immigration enforcement agencies have increased raids in Chicago’s majority‑Latino neighborhoods, detaining immigrants at homes, grocery stores, schools and courthouses. Organizations such as The Resurrection Project and Enlace Chicago reported significant spikes in detentions, and Raul Raymundo of The Resurrection Project condemned the practice, stating, “This is not justice – this is cruelty and this is un‑American.” Advocates urged residents to prepare, connect to resources, and not succumb to fear amid the heightened enforcement and TPS uncertainty.
