Chicago health officials urge vaccinations amid measles and respiratory virus rise

Health officials in the Chicago area are issuing warnings regarding rising respiratory illnesses and measles cases. The Illinois Department of Public Health recently reported two new measles cases among unvaccinated residents, contributing to a nationwide total of over 2,000 reported cases in 2026. In response, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has reminded its community of the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, noting that over 90% of recent cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals.

Simultaneously, medical experts are noting an increase in common respiratory viruses, such as rhinovirus and enteroviruses, as temperatures cool and school seasons begin. While activity levels for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV remain consistent with typical seasonal trends, doctors at Rush Hospital and the Cook County Department of Public Health are urging residents to receive flu and COVID-19 vaccinations before the peak winter season to mitigate the impact of potentially aggressive virus circulation.
