Chicago high school sports disrupted by referee strike over nonpayment

High school sports in Chicago are facing significant disruptions as approximately 250 referees have gone on strike due to nonpayment by Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The strike has already resulted in the cancellation of multiple freshman, junior varsity, and girls' flag football games, as well as volleyball matches.

According to officials, the payment structure was intended to transition from direct school payments during weeks 1 through 3 to CPS-managed payments starting in week 4. However, referees report they have not been paid for several weeks. Officials stated that while they were previously assured funds would be released, those promises were not met.

With the season entering its seventh week, varsity-level competitions are now in jeopardy. Coaches have expressed frustration over the lack of notice regarding cancellations, noting that the situation negatively impacts player development and the overall student experience.
