Chicago Latino festivals face attendance concerns due to ICE fears

Chicago is preparing for the return of major Latino festivals this September, though concerns regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations are impacting community participation. The 55th annual Mexican Independence Day Parade in Little Village is scheduled for September 13, running from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. along a route from Albany Avenue and 26th Street to Kostner Avenue.

Organizers and local businesses face economic uncertainty, as these celebrations are vital for generating revenue before winter. Previous events have seen significant declines in attendance due to fear of immigration enforcement, including the cancellation of May 5th parades in recent years. To support the community, local groups plan to deploy rapid response teams and distribute information regarding legal rights during the festivities.

In addition to the parade, the Pilsen neighborhood will host the Sabor Taco y Tequila Fest from September 25 to 27 as part of the National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
