Chicago man sentenced to 10 years for transit attack
Devon Jones, a 25-year-old with a history of criminal convictions in Illinois, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following a plea deal. The sentencing stems from an October attack on a pregnant woman in a pedestrian walkway connecting two Chicago Transit Authority stations.
During the incident, Jones allegedly struck the woman and struggled with her over a purse. The struggle resulted in the woman falling multiple times and sustaining scratches and bruising. Jones fled the scene with an iPad after the purse strap broke.
Prior to the attack, Jones had been on electronic monitoring after a Cook County judge denied prosecutors' requests to detain him without bond. Under Illinois sentencing policies, his 10-year sentence is expected to result in approximately five years of actual time served.
