Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson defends $17 billion budget proposal
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson defended his proposed $17 billion budget for 2027 during a West Side town hall meeting. The plan, which Johnson describes as a “fair share budget,” includes $130 million in new spending aimed at Chicago Public Schools, pension programs, homelessness prevention, and the hiring of 390 street outreach workers.
To fund the increase, the mayor is proposing a corporate head tax that would charge companies with at least 125 full-time employees $25 per worker each month. The proposal has faced opposition from Governor JB Pritzker, who argued the tax could discourage employers from hiring more staff.
The budget proposal also highlights efforts to combat antisemitism. City Hall claims that anti-Jewish hate crimes in Chicago have declined significantly, with a spokesperson stating they have dropped by 55% this year. This follows previous criticisms from Jewish community members and the Consulate General of Israel regarding the mayor's past political stances and appointments.
