Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson faces petition challenges
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing formal challenges to his nominating petitions for his re-election campaign. The challenges, led by former State Sen. Rickey Hendon on behalf of businessman Willie Wilson, allege that the mayor failed to meet the required threshold of 12,500 valid signatures.
Specific allegations include the submission of over 1,000 photocopied signatures instead of originals, circulator errors, and the inclusion of petitions belonging to other candidates, such as City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin. Hendon described the filing as unprofessional and predicted it could make Johnson the first incumbent Chicago mayor to be disqualified from the ballot.
While Johnson’s political director, Christian Perry, expressed confidence that the mayor will survive the challenge, the legal battle may strain the campaign’s limited resources. Other mayoral candidates, including Susana Mendoza and Alexi Giannoulias, are also facing various petition objections.
