Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Online Reach Grows via Influencers Amid Transparency Concerns

Social media influencers are increasingly amplifying Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s policy messages. Influencer Rachel Cohen, who has over 700,000 followers, has begun volunteering to help shape and share the mayor’s platform, even as Johnson has not confirmed whether he will seek re‑election.

Other creators, such as California‑based researcher Kaitlyn Hennessy, warn that the lack of federal disclosure rules for political influencer posts makes it difficult for voters to see who is being promoted and why. Both Cohen and Hennessy note a noticeable surge in influencer activity, including participants from out of state, aimed at humanising Johnson and expanding his digital presence.

The situation highlights broader questions about transparency in online political messaging, especially as the 2024 Democratic National Convention underscored the growing role of influencers in shaping public discourse.
