Chicago prepares for Mexican Independence Day celebrations
Chicago is preparing for several major Mexican Independence Day celebrations in September 2026. Key events include the 25th anniversary parade in Pilsen on September 5, which will run from 18th Street and Newberry Avenue to Harrison Park.
Another major celebration, the ‘El Grito’ festival, will take place in Grant Park on September 12 and 13. The festival features traditional gastronomy, a Mexican market, and musical performances, with the official civic ceremony scheduled for the evening of September 13. While general festival admission requires a fee, the civic ceremony is free but requires online registration.
In La Villita, the 55th anniversary of the Calle 26 Independence Day Parade is scheduled for September 13. Organizers are implementing security measures and working with local rapid response teams to address community concerns regarding immigration enforcement and previous tensions involving the National Guard. The La Villita Chamber of Commerce expressed optimism for increased participation this year compared to previous years.
